If your passport is lost or stolen when you are abroad, please report the loss immediately to local police authorities and the nearest your country embassy or consulate with the assistance of your local guides.

Remember to write your current address in the space provided in your passport, so that, if it is found, it can be returned to you.

It is always good not to take the passport with you and leave it to the hotel safety box. Taking a copy of your passport is good solution under some circumstances.
